THE TEXAS SAPPHIRES and DWIGHT YOAKAM
San Antonio Express-News, 04/20/2006
He may play that wacked-out bad guy in "Sling Blade," but Dwight Yoakam's also in the right place slinging a guitar on the live stage, especially Friday night at John T. Floore Country Store. Yoakam's on the road in support of "Blame the Vain," one of last year's best albums. With a stripped-down Bakersfield sound and an unusually clever wit and wisdom in his lyrics, Yoakam comes on strong with the get-even song "Intentional Heartache," the unlucky in love song "Lucky That Way" and the yearning "I Wanna Love Again."
Another treat will be opening act The Texas Sapphires, an Austin roots country/bluegrass/string/rock band that released its debut CD this week, "Valley So Steep." Giving this band an edge are the lead vocals of Billy Brent Malkus and Rebecca Lucille Cannon that offer a double whammy on their originals, which sound like classics. Showtime is 9 p.m.
